CAMPAIGN: Cotton Wool Kids Can't Swim

Regulations that often vary from pool to pool and council to council are increasingly taking a hyper-cautious ‘cotton wool’ approach to adults taking their children swimming and are refusing entry to parents who turn up with their children because of ‘health and safety’.

The question of child safety in swimming pools and of how many children an adult takes swimming should be something that is negotiated by experienced professionals and parents themselves. Only by preventing the over bureaucratised approach to child safety can we encourage a more sensible and public spirited approach and get more children swimming. Read more.

CAMPAIGN: Adult Solidarity

For a 'youth' organisation the idea of a campaign for 'adult solidarity' may seem strange, but we strongly believe that the best way to improve society for both adults and children is to re-establish trust between adults. The constant vetting of adults, the litigious culture and the obsession with 'child safety' is not working - it is neither making parents feel secure about their children nor creating a positive environment for socialising young people. For Generation Youth Issues the importance of unsupervised play is being undermined by unnecessary intervention from adults and the risk panic of today. Free Play has stuck as a slogan for our work in giving children and young people the opportunity to experience equal relationships with their peers and the opportunity to develop meaningful life experience.
