For
a 'youth' organisation the idea of a campaign for 'adult solidarity'
may seem strange, but we strongly believe that the best way to improve
society for both adults and children is to re-establish trust between
adults. The constant vetting of adults, the litigious culture and
the obsession with 'child safety' is not working - it is neither
making parents feel secure about their children nor creating a positive
environment for socialising young people.
We must challenge the growing child safety industry and re-establish
trust between adults.
We
believe :
1]
COLLECTIVE RESPONSIBILTY
The best way to keep children safe is to have a community of adults
who take collective responsibility for the young people in their
area.
2]
DON'T WALK ON BY
Children need adult guidance and direction. It is the duty of adults
to engage with children and halt the creation of a 'walk on by society'.
3]
GO BEYOND THE LIMITS OF 'SAFETY'
Keeping children safe is in all our interests, but when 'child safety'
becomes the only framework for relating to children, the lives of
both children and adults are diminished.
4]
CHALLENGE SUSPICION
Rules and regulations that reinforce suspicion amongst adults should
be opposed.
5]
ADULT SOLIDARITY
We should support and trust other adults when they are interacting
with our children. Professionals working with children and adults
in the community share the same goal in seeing children prosper
and develop. An atmosphere dominated by suspicion and doubt poisons
the relationships between adults and children.
6]
START THE DEBATE
To begin this process a debate is needed across society about some
of the damaging effects of the growing child safety 'industry'.
